USA's rocket history in the sixties is well known. Mostly because of their breakthrough with the
first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, in 1969. The space race grew out of the cold war and USA and Sovjet were sworn enemies. After Sovjet launched the first man into space, USA's goal was to land a man on the moon and return him safely back.The

John Glenn
John Herschel Glenn Jr. was born the 18 july, 1921 in Ohio. In 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth and the fifth person in space. He was one of the original seven from the "Mercury Seven" chosen in 1959 to the Mercury-program. February 20 1962, Glenn launched with the spaceship "Friendship 7", and october 29, 1998 he joined the spaceship "Discovery". He became then the oldest astronaut ever. Glenn was in 2012 awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
